MASSAGE FAQS

How often should I have a massage?
Just one treatment can often make a real difference to how you are feeling. That said, it’s often more effective to have a course of regular treatments. This may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on your needs. A treatment plan will be discussed with you, and reviewed as necessary.

When is the best time to have a massage?
This really does depend on your lifestyle. Generally, it is recommended that you follow a treatment with further relaxation. I understand that life isn’t always that easy, so just try not to pick a time where you’ll be able to take it easy!

My skin is very sensitive. What kind of massage oil do you use?
Our massage oil is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free and is a blend of apricot, sesame, grapeseed, coconut oil ester and Vitamin E. Its light so can easily be absorbed by the skin but also very nourishing. If oil is not for you then I also offer the use of Songbird Massage wax in a variety of fragrances.

Do you play music?
Music is optional, if you prefer to not have music played then you will still have a wonderful experience. Any music played is specifically selected to assist in your relaxation.

Do I need to have a full body massage?
Not at all. A full body massage is fantastic but sometimes you may prefer to have a whole hour focussed on your back or your legs, if that’s what your body needs. The massage you receive is very much centred around you and your needs at the time. During the consultation we will talk through how you are feeling and what your body needs, this will help us create the perfect treatment for you.

I don’t feel comfortable removing my clothes. What are the options?
There is no need for you to be naked or down to their underwear to receive a massage. You can undress as far as you feel comfortable, all I ask is that the easier it is for me to reach the area of the body we agree to massage, the easier it will be. I can also massage through clothes, or drapes working without oils. Equally, some people feel totally relaxed when they are naked or just wearing underwear. If this is your preference then you will be properly covered during the session with a sheet or towel to protect your modesty at all times. Only the area being worked on will be exposed. It’s your treatment so it’s totally up to you. /i also offer the facility to work with you on a massage chair and fully clothed if this would be better for you.

Why do you have to ask about my medical history and medication?
Holistic massage treats the whole person and can have an impact on any one of the body systems, be that lymphatic, cardiovascular or circulatory. As this is a hands-on treatment it’s important that your therapist has an awareness of how you are and any ongoing problems or medication so that she can tailor the treatment accordingly. As a MTI qualified therapist, I am required to have a broad knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology so although I am not in a position to diagnose, I’ll have a good understanding of how to work with a broad variety of clients. If you are in any doubt as to if you should be receiving massage you can seek permission from your doctor who will be able to clarify if the treatment is appropriate for you.

What if I am pregnant or think I might be? Is it safe for me to have a massage?
Massage during pregnancy can be hugely beneficial to both mother and baby. It’s perfectly safe for you to receive massage after the first trimester. It’s best to mention what stage you are at when you book your treatment so we can be prepared. It is also possible to use more pillows to support you completely as your pregnancy progresses.

I have a skin complaint that I’m a bit conscious of. Will it still be OK for me to have a massage?
It really does depend on the condition and if you feel comfortable with massage to the affected area. Psoriasis for example can often benefit from having fresh blood moved through to the affected area but you may not feel happy to receive massage if it is uncomfortable or you feel self conscious. There are some conditions that may prohibit massage (such as Impetigo) and some that mean I can’t treat the affected area (athlete’s foot is a good example) so if you’re ever in any doubt then you can discuss the matter over the phone before you book the treatment.

How will I feel after my treatment? Will I be ok to drive?
Holistic massage can have a deeply relaxing effect on the body. Sometimes clients can feel a bit drowsy after the treatment so it’s best to sit and have a glass of water as you bring yourself back into the space. It’s also likely that you’ll feel dehydrated so it’s really important to take lots of water on board. Sometimes, it might be that unexpected feelings or emotions arise during or after a Holistic massage so be sure to take time to ease yourself back into real life after the session.

I have limited mobility. Do you have wheelchair access?
Please contact me to discuss the venue that you wish to visit where possible all the venues I use have wheelchair access to the treatment rooms. I also offer a mobile massage service, where I can provide a massage in your home providing there is sufficient space. There will be a small extra charge for this service to cover mileage and the extra time involved.

REFLEXOLOGY FAQS

What is Reflexology?

“A non-intrusive complementary health therapy Reflexology is an ancient therapy that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas as a mirror image of the body in the feet and hands”.

Reflexology is based on the theory that the feet are like a map of the body and its organs. It is believed that each area of the body is mirrored on the feet and that any areas of imbalance within the body can be detected by the reflexologist providing the treatment. Reflexology brings positive effects in people’s life. It is a holistic therapy that promotes equilibrium and well-being: it redresses imbalances in the body through the caring touch of hands.

Reflexology, a non-invasive complementary therapy that applies specific pressure techniques on the soles of the feet or on the palms of the hands, is much more than a foot or hand massage. This therapy promotes the body’s healing abilities, helps the body work to its maximum level and brings balance to your life. Applying pressure to the feet can make a difference if:

  • you suffer from stress
  • you suffer from anxiety
  • you have been injured
  • you have a chronic condition
  • you are not sleeping properly
  • your hormones are out of balance
  • you are feeling low
